Providing education

Providing education is an important element of our work.

One of the main consequences of armed conflicts is the partial or total collapse of the educational system. Supporting the education of children and youth is essential for the rebuilding of communities after war.

Even while military operations were ongoing in Iraq and ISIS still occupied dozens of towns and villages, we helped equip schools with the materials and supplies necessary for conducting lessons. We bought whiteboards, printers, textbooks, as well as cleaning products and heaters. Many schools were overcrowded, having accepted children from nearby regions that had been taken over by terrorists.

We organized therapy sessions for women who had survived captivity.

One of the most important challenges we faced was providing help to women who had survived ISIS captivity. It is difficult to describe what they endured. Their horrific ordeal included torture, sexual violence, and inhumane treatment. Thousands of women were captured and held for months, sometimes even years. Many were unable to recover from the trauma, and some attempted suicide. To make matters worse, after their release, they were placed in camps for internally displaced persons, where living conditions were extremely poor.

We wanted to help them reintegrate into society and overcome trauma. To that end, we organized handicraft and sewing machine workshops. Participating in these courses gave the women a sense of security, while the company of others with similar experiences helped distract them from their traumatic memories. The initiative proved successful, and we went on to organize similar activities in many other locations.

We build schools and educational centers.

A key focus of our work is building and supporting schools and educational centers. In Iraq, for many years we provided support to the Ourbridge Educational Center in Khanke, which was attended by several hundred children from a nearby camp for internally displaced people. The center offered both educational and sports activities.

In 2021, using funds raised through the 1.5% tax donation scheme, we built a common room in the largest informal camp for displaced people in Sardashty, near Iraq’s border with Syria. In addition to educational classes, the common room hosts games and recreational activities for children and youth of various age groups.

In 2023, in the same region we built a small school from scratch for over 100 children from nearby villages. The old school had been destroyed a few years earlier as a result of military operations. The construction of the new school allowed children to resume their education.

We have been emphasizing support for education since the very beginning of our work.

Therapeutic activities for women that survived ISIS captivity were combined with activities for children. After the sewing course was over, we started regular reading and writing lessons for its participants. The co-management of the educational centre in Khanke is an achievement we are particularly proud of.

We help children and their families in all circumstances.

These are not the only activities we have undertaken in the past—or are carrying out today—to support education. We pay scholarships and tuition fees for children and youth so they can begin or continue their education. We also support and provide for their families.

Currently, in Nigeria we are building a center for widows with children whose husbands and fathers were murdered in terrorist attacks in the central part of the country. The Survivors’ Haven—as this place will be called—will offer them temporary shelter, where they will be able to learn how to care for livestock, grow plants and vegetables, produce spices, and carry out general farm work. In this way, we aim to help them become self-reliant and start their lives anew.
